Proper group action

Summary

A continuous action of a topological group GG on a space XX is proper when the map (g,x)↦(g⋅x,x)(g, x) \mapsto (g \cdot x, x) is a proper map. Informally, group elements that move a compact set back onto itself form a compact set. Proper actions have Hausdorff orbit spaces, closed orbits and compact stabilizers. They are the right setting for quotients such as homogeneous spaces G/HG/H and for the action of discrete groups on manifolds.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
