Quantum tunnelling
Summary
Quantum tunnelling is the passage of a quantum particle through a potential barrier that is higher than its energy. A classical particle with that energy would be reflected with certainty. It follows from the Schrödinger equation, whose solutions decay but do not vanish inside the barrier. It explains alpha decay and is the working principle of the scanning tunnelling microscope.
