Random walk on a group

Summary

A random walk on a group GG starts at the identity and multiplies by independent random elements of GG. All these elements are drawn from one probability measure μ\mu. It is a Markov chain on GG whose transition probabilities are invariant under the group. When μ\mu is uniform on a symmetric generating set, it is the simple random walk on the Cayley graph. The long-run behaviour of the walk reflects the algebra and geometry of the group. For example, let GG be finitely generated and let μ\mu be symmetric with support generating GG. By a theorem of Kesten, the return probabilities then decay exponentially exactly when GG is not amenable.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
