Sequence spaces lp
Example
Let be a real number. Let be the set of real sequences with , and let Let be the set of bounded real sequences, with . Then each , for , is a vector space, is a norm on it, and is a Banach space.
Remarks
The norms extend the p-norms on R^n to infinite sequences. For , we have , and the inclusion is strict. For example, is in but not in . The space has the inner product , and it is a Hilbert space. The closed unit ball of is not compact: the unit vectors satisfy for and .
Explanations
L1 human
The spaces are infinite-dimensional versions of with the p-norm. A sequence belongs to when its terms go to fast enough for the sum of to be finite.
