Shape-memory alloy
Summary
A shape-memory alloy is a metal alloy that can be deformed at low temperature and returns to its original shape when it is heated. The effect comes from a reversible martensitic transformation between a high-temperature phase, austenite, and a low-temperature phase, martensite. Nickel–titanium alloys are the best-known examples. In mathematics these alloys are a main motivation for the energy-minimisation theory of crystal microstructure.
