Spherical astronomy
Summary
Spherical astronomy is the part of astronomy that describes where celestial objects appear in the sky. It also describes how these positions change with time and with the place of the observer. It treats every object as a point on the celestial sphere and computes with the tools of spherical trigonometry. It is the base of timekeeping, navigation by the stars and the making of star catalogues.
