Summary

Sometimes used as a synonym of (□)(\square) for avoiding nested parentheses.

Equivalence class: given an equivalence relation, [x][x] often denotes the equivalence class of the element xx.

Integral part: if xx is a real number, [x][x] often denotes the integral part or truncation of xx, that is, the integer obtained by removing all digits after the decimal mark. This notation has also been used for other variants of floor and ceiling functions.

Iverson bracket: if PP is a predicate, [P][P] may denote the Iverson bracket, that is the function that takes the value 11 for the values of the free variables in PP for which PP is true, and takes the value 00 otherwise. For example, [x=y][x=y] is the Kronecker delta function, which equals one if x=yx=y, and zero otherwise.

In combinatorics or computer science, sometimes [n][n] with n∈ℕn\in\mathbb{N} denotes the set {1,2,3,…,n}\{1,2,3,\ldots,n\} of positive integers up to nn, with [0]=∅[0]=\emptyset.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
