Steinberg relations
Summary
The Steinberg relations are three identities satisfied by the elementary matrices over any ring. They say how two elementary matrices with the same position combine, and how the commutator of two elementary matrices looks. Taken as defining relations, they give the Steinberg group. The relations that hold among elementary matrices but do not follow from these three form the group .
