Subbasis

Definition

Let XX be a set and let S\mathcal{S} be a set of subsets of XX. The topology generated by S\mathcal{S} is the smallest topology on XX that contains S\mathcal{S}. It is the intersection of all topologies on XX that contain S\mathcal{S}. If (X,τ)(X, \tau) is a topological space and τ\tau is the topology generated by S\mathcal{S}, then S\mathcal{S} is a subbasis of τ\tau.

Remarks

The open sets of the generated topology are the unions of finite intersections of members of S\mathcal{S}. Here the empty intersection is XX. Thus the finite intersections of members of S\mathcal{S} form a basis of the generated topology. The open rays (−∞,a)(-\infty, a) and (b,∞)(b, \infty), with a,b∈Ra, b \in \mathbb{R}, form a subbasis of the usual topology of R\mathbb{R}. The sets πi−1(U)\pi_i^{-1}(U), with UU open, form a subbasis of the product topology.

Explanations

A subbasis is a set of open sets that you want to have. The topology is the smallest one that makes them all open. You get all open sets by taking finite intersections of them and then arbitrary unions.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

4 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
