Symmetric decreasing rearrangement

Summary

The symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function ff on ℝn\R^n is a radial function f∗f^*, decreasing in ∣x∣\abs{x}. Its superlevel sets are balls centred at the origin with the same volumes as the superlevel sets of ∣f∣\abs{f}. It keeps every LpL^p norm, does not increase the Dirichlet energy, and does not decrease certain double integrals. So it is the main tool to show that balls and radial functions are optimal in variational problems. Examples are the Faber–Krahn inequality and the isoperimetric inequality. It is the nn-dimensional, symmetric version of the decreasing rearrangement on [0,∞)[0, \infty).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
