Tangent function

Definition

The tangent function is defined by tan⁡x=sin⁡xcos⁡x\tan x = \frac{\sin x}{\cos x} for all real xx with cos⁡x≠0\cos x \ne 0, that is, for x≠π2+kπx \ne \frac{\pi}{2} + k \pi with k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}.

Remarks

The function is odd and periodic with period π\pi. On (−π/2,π/2)(-\pi/2, \pi/2) it is strictly increasing, and it maps this interval onto R\mathbb{R}. The related functions are cot⁡x=cos⁡x/sin⁡x\cot x = \cos x / \sin x, sec⁡x=1/cos⁡x\sec x = 1 / \cos x and csc⁡x=1/sin⁡x\csc x = 1 / \sin x. Mathlib defines Real.tan with the value 00 where cos⁡x=0\cos x = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The tangent of an angle is the slope of the line through the origin at that angle. It is undefined where this line is vertical.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

6 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
