Tate module

Summary

Fix a prime ℓ\ell. The ℓ\ell-adic Tate module of an abelian group collects its elements of ℓ\ell-power order into one module over the ℓ\ell-adic integers. Let AA be an abelian variety of dimension gg over a field kk whose characteristic is not ℓ\ell. Then the Tate module of AA is free of rank 2g2g. The absolute Galois group of kk acts on it, which gives an ℓ\ell-adic Galois representation. These representations carry much of the arithmetic of AA.
