Thomson scattering
Summary
Thomson scattering is the elastic scattering of electromagnetic radiation by a free charged particle, in the classical, low-energy limit. The incident wave shakes the charge, and the accelerated charge radiates a wave of the same frequency. Its cross-section does not depend on the frequency. It governs the scattering of light by free electrons in plasmas and in stars, and it is the low-energy limit of Compton scattering. See the definition.
