Thue–Morse sequence

Description

The Thue–Morse sequence is the binary sequence (tn)n≥0(t_n)_{n \ge 0} given by t0=0t_0 = 0, t2n=tnt_{2n} = t_n and t2n+1=1−tnt_{2n+1} = 1 - t_n. Equivalently, tnt_n is 00 if the binary expansion of nn has an even number of digits 11, and 11 otherwise. Its first sixteen terms are 0110 1001 1001 0110.0110\,1001\,1001\,0110.

Remarks

Check: t5=0t_5 = 0 because 5=10125 = 101_2 has two digits 11, and t7=1t_7 = 1 because 7=11127 = 111_2 has three.

The sequence is the fixed point, starting with 00, of the morphism μ\mu of words with μ(0)=01\mu(0) = 01 and μ(1)=10\mu(1) = 10. So the first 2m+12^{m+1} terms are the first 2m2^m terms followed by their complement, where 00 and 11 are swapped.

The sequence is overlap-free: it has no factor of the form axaxaa x a x a, where aa is a letter and xx is a word. In particular it has no factor of the form uuuu u u with uu nonempty. Thue proved overlap-freeness, and it makes the sequence a basic example in combinatorics on words. It is not periodic, and it is a 22-automatic sequence, computed by a finite automaton that reads nn in base 22.
