Tidal force
Summary
The tidal force of an external body, such as the Moon, on an extended body, such as the Earth, is a difference of two pulls. It is the pull of the external body at a point minus its pull at the centre of mass. It stretches the body along the line towards the external body and squeezes it across that line. It falls off with the cube of the distance, and it drives the ocean tides, the Earth tide and tidal heating of moons.
