statement theorem

Tietze extension theorem

Statement

Let XX be a normal space, let A⊆XA \subseteq X be closed, and let f ⁣:A→Rf \colon A \to \mathbb{R} be continuous for the subspace topology on AA. Then there is a continuous F ⁣:X→RF \colon X \to \mathbb{R} whose restriction to AA is ff. If also ∣f(a)∣≤M|f(a)| \le M for all a∈Aa \in A, then one can choose FF with ∣F(x)∣≤M|F(x)| \le M for all x∈Xx \in X.

Remarks

The proof applies Urysohn's lemma many times and sums a uniformly convergent series of functions. The converse holds: if each continuous function from each closed subset to R\mathbb{R} extends, then XX is normal. The closedness of AA is needed: the function sin⁡(1/x)\sin(1/x) on (0,1](0, 1] has no continuous extension to [0,1][0, 1].

Explanations

L1 human

On a normal space, each continuous real function on a closed set can be extended to the whole space, without losing continuity. You can also keep the same bound on the function.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
