Tisserand's parameter
Summary
Tisserand's parameter is a combination of the semi-major axis, eccentricity and inclination of a small body. It stays nearly unchanged during a close encounter with a planet. It comes from the Jacobi integral of the restricted three-body problem. Astronomers use it to recognise a comet after a planetary encounter and to sort small bodies into families. See the definition.
