Topological group structure of a vector space

Definition

Let ๐•‚\mathbb{K} be โ„\R or โ„‚\C, and let EE be a topological vector space over ๐•‚\mathbb{K}. The topological group structure of EE is the additive group (E,+)(E, +) together with the topology of EE. It is a commutative topological group: the maps (x,y)โ†ฆx+y(x, y) \mapsto x + y from Eร—EE \times E to EE and xโ†ฆโˆ’xx \mapsto -x from EE to EE are continuous.

Remarks

The map xโ†ฆโˆ’xx \mapsto -x is continuous because it is scalar multiplication by โˆ’1-1. For each aโˆˆEa \in E the translation xโ†ฆx+ax \mapsto x + a is a homeomorphism of EE, with inverse xโ†ฆxโˆ’ax \mapsto x - a. So a set UU is a neighbourhood of aa if and only if Uโˆ’aU - a is a neighbourhood of 00. Example: โ„n\R^n with its Euclidean topology is a commutative topological group under addition, since addition and negation are continuous functions of the coordinates. Non-example: give โ„\R the topology whose open sets are โˆ…\emptyset, โ„\R and the intervals (a,โˆž)(a, \infty). This is not a topological group, because xโ†ฆโˆ’xx \mapsto -x is not continuous: the preimage of (0,โˆž)(0, \infty) is (โˆ’โˆž,0)(-\infty, 0), which is not open. The topological group structure gives a uniform structure on EE; a net (xi)(x_i) is Cauchy when xiโˆ’xjx_i - x_j tends to 00.
