Torsion submodule

Summary

Let MM be a module over a commutative ring RR. Its torsion submodule is the set of elements of MM that are killed by some non-zero-divisor of RR. It is a submodule of MM, and it measures how far MM is from being torsion-free. For R=ℤR = \Z it is the torsion subgroup of an abelian group. Over a principal ideal domain, a finitely generated module splits as its torsion submodule plus a free module.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
