Total variation of a measure

Summary

Let ν\nu be a signed measure or a complex measure. Its total variation ∣ν∣\abs{\nu} is the smallest positive measure with ∣ν(E)∣≤∣ν∣(E)\abs{\nu(E)} \le \abs{\nu}(E) for every set EE. It is computed as the supremum of ∑∣ν(Ei)∣\sum \abs{\nu(E_i)} over partitions of a set into measurable pieces. For a signed measure it equals ν++ν−\nu^+ + \nu^- from the Jordan decomposition. The number ∣ν∣(X)\abs{\nu}(X) is the total variation norm, which makes the finite signed or complex measures a Banach space. It extends the total variation of a function to measures.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
