Trace operator

Summary

The trace operator gives boundary values to functions in a Sobolev space, which in general are only defined up to sets of measure zero. Let UU be a bounded open set with C1C^1 boundary, and let 1≤p<∞1 \le p < \infty. The trace operator extends the restriction u↦u∣∂Uu \mapsto u|_{\partial U} to all of W1,p(U)W^{1,p}(U), as a bounded linear map into Lp(∂U)L^p(\partial U). It gives a precise meaning to boundary conditions such as u=gu = g on ∂U\partial U for weak solutions of boundary value problems.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
