conjecture

Twin prime conjecture

Statement

There are infinitely many prime numbers pp such that p+2p + 2 is also prime.

Remarks

A pair of primes (p,p+2)(p, p + 2) is a pair of twin primes. The first pairs are (3,5)(3, 5), (5,7)(5, 7), (11,13)(11, 13), (17,19)(17, 19), (29,31)(29, 31). The conjecture is the case k=1k = 1 of the conjecture of de Polignac: for each positive integer kk, there are infinitely many primes pp such that p+2kp + 2k is prime. The conjecture is open.

History

De Polignac stated the general conjecture in 1849. In 2013, Yitang Zhang proved that some gap N<7⋅107N < 7 \cdot 10^7 occurs between infinitely many pairs of primes. Later work by Maynard and the Polymath project reduced the bound to 246246.

Explanations

L1 human

Twin primes are primes with only one number between them, like 4141 and 4343. The conjecture says that such pairs never stop, even though primes become rarer.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge uses out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
