statement proposition

Variance as the mean of the square minus the square of the mean

Statement

Let XX be a real random variable with E[X2]<∞E[X^2] < \infty. Then Var⁡(X)=E[X2]−(E[X])2.\operatorname{Var}(X) = E[X^2] - (E[X])^2.

Remarks

Proof: with μ=E[X]\mu = E[X], (X−μ)2=X2−2μX+μ2(X - \mu)^2 = X^2 - 2\mu X + \mu^2. By linearity of expectation, E[(X−μ)2]=E[X2]−2μ2+μ2=E[X2]−μ2E[(X - \mu)^2] = E[X^2] - 2\mu^2 + \mu^2 = E[X^2] - \mu^2. As a corollary, (E[X])2≤E[X2](E[X])^2 \le E[X^2]. For a fair die, E[X2]=91/6E[X^2] = 91/6 and E[X]=7/2E[X] = 7/2, so Var⁡(X)=91/6−49/4=35/12\operatorname{Var}(X) = 91/6 - 49/4 = 35/12. In floating-point arithmetic, this formula can lose much precision when E[X2]E[X^2] and (E[X])2(E[X])^2 are close.

Explanations

L1 human

This formula is often the fastest way to compute a variance: find the average of the squares and subtract the square of the average.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
