statement proposition

Variance under scaling

Statement

Let XX be a real random variable with finite variance and let a∈Ra \in \mathbb{R}. Then Var⁡(aX)=a2Var⁡(X).\operatorname{Var}(aX) = a^2 \operatorname{Var}(X).

Remarks

Proof: E[aX]=aE[X]E[aX] = a E[X] by linearity of expectation. So (aX−E[aX])2=a2(X−E[X])2(aX - E[aX])^2 = a^2 (X - E[X])^2, and one takes expectations. For the standard deviation, the formula becomes σaX=∣a∣ σX\sigma_{aX} = |a| \, \sigma_X. In particular, Var⁡(−X)=Var⁡(X)\operatorname{Var}(-X) = \operatorname{Var}(X).

Explanations

If you measure in centimeters instead of meters, every value is multiplied by 100100. The variance is then multiplied by 1002=10000100^2 = 10000, because it is measured in squared units.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
