Vibration of plates
Summary
The vibration of plates is the study of the time-dependent transverse motion of thin elastic plates. In Kirchhoff–Love plate theory the motion obeys a fourth-order equation in space and second order in time. Free vibrations split into normal modes, each with a natural frequency and a mode shape, found from an eigenvalue problem for the biharmonic operator. The lines where a mode shape vanishes are the nodal lines, made visible by Chladni figures.
