Waveguide
Summary
A waveguide is a structure, uniform along one axis, that confines electromagnetic waves in the transverse directions and guides them along the axis. Typical examples are hollow metal pipes for microwaves, dielectric slabs and optical fibers. Its guided waves are modes with a definite transverse profile and a propagation constant along the axis. Each mode of a hollow metal guide propagates only above a cutoff frequency, set by the size of the cross-section.
