Weak gravitational lensing
Summary
Weak gravitational lensing is the small distortion of the shapes of distant galaxies by the gravity of the matter along the line of sight. Each galaxy is distorted by only about one per cent, far less than its natural shape varies. So the signal is extracted statistically from many galaxies. It maps the total mass, dark matter included, of clusters and of the large-scale structure of the universe.
