Manifolds and cell complexes Three-manifolds Example

Weeks manifold

Example

Take the complement of the Whitehead link in S3S^3. The Weeks manifold WW is the closed orientable 33-manifold obtained from it by Dehn filling with coefficients (5,1)(5, 1) and (5,2)(5, 2) on the two components. It is a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold. Its hyperbolic volume is approximately 0.94270.9427. Its first homology group is H1(W;ℤ)≅ℤ/5⊕ℤ/5H_1(W; \Z) \cong \Z/5 \oplus \Z/5.

The hyperbolic structure can be checked by computer, for example with the program SnapPea of Jeffrey Weeks.

Remarks

Gabai, Meyerhoff and Milley proved in 2009 that WW has the smallest volume among all closed orientable hyperbolic 33-manifolds. By Mostow rigidity, its volume is a topological invariant, so this is a statement about topology.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
