Zel'dovich pancake
Summary
A Zel'dovich pancake is a thin sheet of high density that forms when a region of matter collapses along one axis first. In the Zel'dovich approximation a generic overdense region contracts fastest along one direction, so the first structures to form are flattened sheets rather than points. Pancakes are caustics of the flow of matter, and they explain the sheets, filaments and voids of the cosmic web.
