Manifolds and cell complexes Definition
3-manifold
Definition
A -manifold is a topological space such that:
- is Hausdorff;
- is second countable;
- every point of has an open neighbourhood homeomorphic to an open subset of .
Equivalently, it is a topological manifold of dimension . A -manifold with boundary allows open subsets of the closed half-space in clause 3, and a closed -manifold is a compact one without boundary.
Remarks
Example: the -torus is a closed -manifold. The quotient map restricted to any open cube of side is a homeomorphism onto an open subset, and is Hausdorff, second countable and compact.
Non-example: the cone on the torus fails clause 3 at the cone point . The local homology group is , which matches , but , while at a point of this group is .
Other standard examples are the -sphere , the lens spaces and the Poincaré homology sphere.
