Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proposition

A map from R^n to R^m is a matrix transformation if and only if it is linear

Builds on Linear map

Statement

Let T ⁣:ℝn→ℝmT \colon \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m be a function. There is an m×nm \times n matrix AA with T(x)=AxT(x) = Ax for all x∈ℝnx \in \mathbb{R}^n if and only if TT is a linear map. That is, T(cv)=cT(v)T(cv) = cT(v) and T(v+w)=T(v)+T(w)T(v+w) = T(v) + T(w) for all scalars cc and all vectors v,wv, w.

When this holds, the matrix AA is the one whose jj-th column is T(ej)T(e_j), where e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n are the standard basis vectors of ℝn\mathbb{R}^n. So A=[ T(e1)  T(e2) ⋯ T(en) ]A = [\,T(e_1)\ \ T(e_2)\ \cdots\ T(e_n)\,].

Remarks

Multiplication by a matrix always respects sums and scalar multiples. The converse holds because each x=∑jxjejx = \sum_j x_j e_j is sent to ∑jxjT(ej)\sum_j x_j T(e_j), which is the product of the matrix of these columns with xx.
