example

A subgroup of order two in S3 is not normal

Example

In the symmetric group S3S_3, let H={e,(1 2)}H = \{e, (1\,2)\}. Compose permutations from right to left. HH is a subgroup, because (1 2)(1 2)=e(1\,2)(1\,2) = e. The left coset of (1 2 3)(1\,2\,3) is (1 2 3)H={(1 2 3),(1 3)}(1\,2\,3)H = \{(1\,2\,3), (1\,3)\}. The right coset of (1 2 3)(1\,2\,3) is H(1 2 3)={(1 2 3),(2 3)}H(1\,2\,3) = \{(1\,2\,3), (2\,3)\}. These cosets are different. Thus HH is not normal in S3S_3.

Remarks

HH has index 33. Thus the result for index two does not apply to HH.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
