Abel–Jacobi map
Builds on Riemann surfaceAbelian differential
Definition
Let be a compact Riemann surface of genus . Let be a basis of the space of holomorphic Abelian differentials on . Let be the set of vectors , where runs over the closed loops in . Then is a lattice of rank in , and is the Jacobian variety of . Fix a base point . The Abel–Jacobi map is where each integral is taken along the same path from to . It extends to divisors by .
Remarks
The map is well defined: two paths from to differ by a closed loop, which changes the vector of integrals by an element of . On divisors of degree the result does not depend on .
Example: let be a complex torus with and . The integral from to is modulo the periods of , which form . So is an isomorphism from onto .
Non-example: the map into itself, without the quotient by , is not well defined on . Going once around a loop with a nonzero period changes its value.
Abel's theorem: a divisor of degree is the divisor of a meromorphic function if and only if . Jacobi inversion: the induced map from effective divisors of degree to is surjective. For the map is injective, and for it is a holomorphic embedding.
