Definition
Let be a Riemann surface. An Abelian differential on is a meromorphic -form on . That is, to each chart of it assigns a meromorphic function on the chart domain, written . On the overlap of two charts and with forms and , these must satisfy The differential is classified as follows.
- It is of the first kind if every is holomorphic.
- It is of the second kind if every residue of every is zero.
- It is of the third kind in general, that is, with arbitrary poles and residues.
Remarks
Example: on the torus for a lattice , the form is well defined, since the coordinate changes are translations with . It is of the first kind and has no zeros.
Non-example: on the Riemann sphere, is not an Abelian differential, because has an essential singularity at and so is not meromorphic there. Also itself on the sphere has a pole of order at : in the chart it becomes . So it is an Abelian differential of the second kind but not of the first kind.
Some authors, notably in the study of translation surfaces, use "Abelian differential" for a holomorphic -form only.
