Measure and integration The Lebesgue integral Proposition
Absolute continuity of the Lebesgue integral
Builds on Integrable functionIntegral of a non-negative functionMonotone convergence theorem
Statement
Let be a measure space and let be a real or complex integrable function on . Then for every there is with the following property. For every with , where the integral is an integral of a non-negative function.
Remarks
Proof idea: let . By the monotone convergence theorem, , so one can fix with . Then , and works.
Example: on with Lebesgue measure, the function is absolutely continuous. Indeed, a finite union of disjoint intervals of total length less than has measure less than .
Integrability is needed. For on with Lebesgue measure, the set has measure less than but .

For a student
In the language of measures, defines a finite measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to , in the - sense. The Radon–Nikodym theorem gives a converse: every finite measure absolutely continuous with respect to a σ-finite measure has this form. The uniform version of this property, for a whole family of functions, is part of uniform integrability.
