Definition

Let (Q,L)(Q, L) be a Lagrangian system with configuration space QQ and Lagrangian L(t,q,q˙)L(t, q, \dot q). Fix times t0<t1t_0 < t_1. The action of a C1C^1 path q ⁣:[t0,t1]→Qq \colon [t_0, t_1] \to Q is S[q]=∫t0t1L(t,q(t),q˙(t)) dt.S[q] = \int_{t_0}^{t_1} L\big(t, q(t), \dot q(t)\big)\, dt. So SS is a functional on the set of paths in QQ over [t0,t1][t_0, t_1].

Remarks

Another standard quantity is the abbreviated action S0[q]=∫∑ipi dqiS_0[q] = \int \sum_i p_i \, dq_i, with pi=∂L/∂q˙ip_i = \partial L / \partial \dot q_i, used in Maupertuis's principle. In physics the action is measured in joule-seconds, the unit of Planck's constant.

Example: a free particle of mass mm on the line, L=12mq˙2L = \tfrac12 m\dot q^2, moving from q(0)=0q(0) = 0 to q(1)=aq(1) = a. The path q(t)=atq(t) = at has action ∫0112ma2 dt=12ma2\int_0^1 \tfrac12 m a^2\, dt = \tfrac12 m a^2. The path q(t)=at2q(t) = at^2 has action ∫0112m(2at)2 dt=23ma2\int_0^1 \tfrac12 m (2at)^2\, dt = \tfrac23 m a^2, which is larger.

Non-example: the Lagrangian LL itself is not the action; it is a function of one instant, while the action depends on a whole path.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
