Adams operations

Definition
Let be a lambda-ring with operations , and let . The Adams operations , for , are defined by the identity of power series Equivalently, they are given recursively by Newton's formula
Remarks
So and . Newton's formula expresses the power sums through the elementary symmetric polynomials; if is a sum of line elements, then and .
In a lambda-ring the satisfy:
- Each is a ring homomorphism.
- .
- if is a line element, that is, .
- for every prime .
Example: in with , one gets , so for all .
Non-example: the map is not on , since while ; squaring is not additive, while is.
