Additive energy

Builds on Abelian groupSumset

Definition

Let GG be an abelian group, and let AA and BB be finite subsets of GG. The additive energy of AA and BB is the number E(A,B)=∣{(a1,a2,b1,b2)∈A×A×B×B:a1+b1=a2+b2}∣.E(A, B) = \abs{\set{(a_1, a_2, b_1, b_2) \in A \times A \times B \times B : a_1 + b_1 = a_2 + b_2}}. One writes E(A)=E(A,A)E(A) = E(A, A).

Remarks

Let r(x)r(x) be the number of pairs (a,b)∈A×B(a, b) \in A \times B with a+b=xa + b = x. Then E(A,B)=∑xr(x)2E(A, B) = \sum_{x} r(x)^2, summed over the sumset A+BA + B. For A={0,1,2}A = \set{0, 1, 2} in ℤ\Z, the values of rr on 0,1,2,3,40, 1, 2, 3, 4 are 1,2,3,2,11, 2, 3, 2, 1, so E(A)=1+4+9+4+1=19E(A) = 1 + 4 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 19. A quadruple with a1+b1≠a2+b2a_1 + b_1 \ne a_2 + b_2 is not counted; for example (0,1,0,0)(0, 1, 0, 0) is not counted for A=B={0,1,2}A = B = \set{0, 1, 2}, since 0+0≠1+00 + 0 \ne 1 + 0. The trivial quadruples with a1=a2a_1 = a_2 and b1=b2b_1 = b_2 always count, so E(A,B)≥∣A∣∣B∣E(A, B) \ge \abs{A}\abs{B}. Also E(A,B)≤min⁡(∣A∣2∣B∣,∣A∣∣B∣2)E(A, B) \le \min(\abs{A}^2\abs{B}, \abs{A}\abs{B}^2). The Cauchy–Schwarz inequality gives E(A,B)≥∣A∣2∣B∣2/∣A+B∣E(A, B) \ge \abs{A}^2 \abs{B}^2 / \abs{A + B}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
