Definition
Let and be preadditive categories. A functor is additive if for all objects of and all . Equivalently, each map , , is a homomorphism of abelian groups.
Remarks
An additive functor sends zero morphisms to zero morphisms and zero objects to zero objects. If and are additive categories, a functor is additive if and only if it preserves binary biproducts.
Example: for a fixed abelian group , the functor from abelian groups to abelian groups is additive. For and , one has . Likewise the tensor product functor is additive.
Non-example: the functor , , on abelian groups is not additive. On , with , the morphism goes to multiplication by , while is multiplication by .
