Statement

Let pp be a prime and consider operations on Hβˆ—(X;𝔽p)H^*(X; \F_p) for spaces XX. All binomial coefficients below are read modulo pp, and (mk)=0\binom{m}{k} = 0 when k<0k < 0 or k>mk > m.

  1. For p=2p = 2, the Steenrod squares satisfy, for all integers a,b>0a, b > 0 with a<2ba < 2b, SqaSqb=βˆ‘j=0⌊a/2βŒ‹(bβˆ’1βˆ’jaβˆ’2j)Sqa+bβˆ’jSqj.Sq^a Sq^b = \sum_{j=0}^{\floor{a/2}} \binom{b - 1 - j}{a - 2j} Sq^{a + b - j} Sq^j.
  2. For pp odd, the Steenrod reduced powers satisfy, for all integers a,b>0a, b > 0 with a<pba < pb, PaPb=βˆ‘j=0⌊a/pβŒ‹(βˆ’1)a+j((pβˆ’1)(bβˆ’j)βˆ’1aβˆ’pj)Pa+bβˆ’jPj.P^a P^b = \sum_{j=0}^{\floor{a/p}} (-1)^{a + j} \binom{(p-1)(b - j) - 1}{a - pj} P^{a + b - j} P^j.
  3. For pp odd, with Ξ²\beta the Bockstein homomorphism of 0β†’β„€/pβ†’β„€/p2β†’β„€/pβ†’00 \to \Z/p \to \Z/p^2 \to \Z/p \to 0, for all integers a,b>0a, b > 0 with a≀pba \le pb, PaΞ²Pb=βˆ‘j=0⌊a/pβŒ‹(βˆ’1)a+j((pβˆ’1)(bβˆ’j)aβˆ’pj)Ξ²Pa+bβˆ’jPj+βˆ‘j=0⌊(aβˆ’1)/pβŒ‹(βˆ’1)a+j+1((pβˆ’1)(bβˆ’j)βˆ’1aβˆ’pjβˆ’1)Pa+bβˆ’jΞ²Pj.P^a \beta P^b = \sum_{j=0}^{\floor{a/p}} (-1)^{a + j} \binom{(p-1)(b - j)}{a - pj} \beta P^{a + b - j} P^j + \sum_{j=0}^{\floor{(a-1)/p}} (-1)^{a + j + 1} \binom{(p-1)(b - j) - 1}{a - pj - 1} P^{a + b - j} \beta P^j.

Remarks

One proof computes the operations on the cohomology of a product of Eilenberg–MacLane spaces, or of symmetric products, where all compositions are visible. Another proof packages the operations into a generating function and uses the Cartan formula.

Example for p=2p = 2: taking a=b=1a = b = 1 gives Sq1Sq1=(01)Sq2=0Sq^1 Sq^1 = \binom{0}{1} Sq^2 = 0. Taking a=1,b=2a = 1, b = 2 gives Sq1Sq2=Sq3Sq^1 Sq^2 = Sq^3. Taking a=b=2a = b = 2 gives Sq2Sq2=Sq3Sq1Sq^2 Sq^2 = Sq^3 Sq^1.

The condition a<2ba < 2b is needed: when aβ‰₯2ba \ge 2b the composite SqaSqbSq^a Sq^b is already admissible and is not rewritten. The relations, together with Sq0=1Sq^0 = 1 (and P0=1P^0 = 1, Ξ²2=0\beta^2 = 0 for odd pp), give all relations among composites of these operations. So the mod pp Steenrod algebra is the free associative algebra on the operations modulo these relations.

Going deeper

For a student

The Adem relations make the Steenrod algebra computable: the admissible monomials form a basis, which is the Cartan–Serre basis. They show that SqnSq^n is decomposable unless nn is a power of 22, so the algebra is generated by the Sq2kSq^{2^k}. This fact is the starting point of the Hopf invariant one problem and of the Adams spectral sequence.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
