Definition
Let be a Lie group with identity and Lie algebra , the tangent space at . For , let , , be the inner automorphism given by . Since , its differential at is a linear map . The adjoint representation of is the map
Remarks
From and the chain rule, , so is a representation; it is also smooth.
Example: for and , the map is the restriction of the linear map of . So .
Non-example: the map , with , does not define a representation on . For , does not fix , so sends to , not to .
The differential of at is the adjoint representation of the Lie algebra , given by . The two are related by , and .
