Definition

Let XX and YY be topological spaces, let AA be a closed subset of YY, and let f ⁣:A→Xf \colon A \to X be a continuous map. Let ∼\sim be the smallest equivalence relation on the disjoint union X⊔YX \sqcup Y such that a∼f(a)a \sim f(a) for every a∈Aa \in A. The adjunction space is the quotient set X∪fY=(X⊔Y)/∼,X \cup_f Y = (X \sqcup Y) / {\sim}, with the quotient topology. The map ff is called the attaching map.

Remarks

The composite X→X⊔Y→X∪fYX \to X \sqcup Y \to X \cup_f Y is a closed topological embedding, and Y∖AY \setminus A maps homeomorphically onto an open subset. Many authors only ask that AA be a subspace; the closedness of AA is needed for these two facts.

Example: let Y=D2Y = D^2 be the closed unit disc, A=S1A = S^1 its boundary circle, and X=S1X = S^1 with f(z)=z2f(z) = z^2. Then ff is continuous and AA is closed in YY, so X∪fD2X \cup_f D^2 is an adjunction space. It is homeomorphic to the real projective plane.

Example: if XX is a one-point space, then X∪fYX \cup_f Y is the quotient Y/AY / A that collapses AA to a point.

Non-example: let Y=[0,1]Y = [0, 1], let A=(0,1]A = (0, 1], let XX be a one-point space, and let ff be the constant map. The clause that AA is closed fails, and the quotient is a two-point space whose open sets are ∅\varnothing, {[A]}\set{[A]} and the whole space. There the image of XX is the open point [A][A], which is not closed.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
