Definition

Let GG be a real reductive Lie group and let KK be a maximal compact subgroup of GG. Let π\pi be a representation of GG on a Hilbert space VV such that the map G×V→VG \times V \to V, (g,v)↦π(g)v(g, v) \mapsto \pi(g) v, is continuous. The representation π\pi is admissible if:

  1. the restriction π∣K\pi|_K is unitary;
  2. for each irreducible representation τ\tau of KK, the multiplicity of τ\tau in π∣K\pi|_K is finite.

Remarks

The multiplicity of τ\tau is the dimension of Hom⁡K(Vτ,V)\Hom_K(V_\tau, V), the space of continuous KK-equivariant linear maps from the space of τ\tau to VV.

Example: let G=SL2(ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}_2(\R) and K=SO(2)K = \mathrm{SO}(2), and let GG act on functions on ℝ2∖{0}\R^2 \setminus \set{0} that satisfy f(tx)=∣t∣−1−νf(x)f(tx) = \abs{t}^{-1-\nu} f(x) for t≠0t \ne 0, with ν∈iℝ\nu \in i\R, by (π(g)f)(x)=f(g−1x)(\pi(g) f)(x) = f(g^{-1} x). Such an ff is determined by its values on the unit circle, and the norm is the L2L^2 norm there. The characters of KK are eiθ↦einθe^{i\theta} \mapsto e^{in\theta} with n∈ℤn \in \Z. Each one with nn even occurs exactly once, spanned by the function einθe^{in\theta} on the circle, and the odd ones do not occur, so π\pi is admissible.

Non-example: the right regular representation of G=SL2(ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}_2(\R) on L2(G)L^2(G) is not admissible. Its vectors fixed by KK are the functions invariant under right translation by KK, which form the infinite-dimensional space L2(G/K)L^2(G/K). So clause 2 fails for the trivial representation of KK.

Over a non-archimedean local field FF, a representation of G(F)G(F) on a complex vector space VV is admissible under two conditions. Every vector is fixed by some compact open subgroup, and the space VK′V^{K'} is finite-dimensional for each compact open subgroup K′K'.
