Affine combination
Definition
Let be a field and let be an affine space over a vector space over . Let be points of , and let be elements of with . The affine combination of the points with the weights is the point where is a point of . The result does not depend on the choice of , because the weights add up to 1.
Remarks
In a vector space with , the affine combination is the linear combination . The midpoint of and is the affine combination with the weights and . Affine maps keep affine combinations: . An affine combination with all weights , over the real numbers, is a convex combination.

You cannot add two points of the plane in a sensible way without an origin. But a weighted average of points, with weights that sum to 1, gives the same point for each choice of origin. For example, is the centroid of the triangle .
