Definition
Let be a smooth manifold with tangent bundle , and let be the space of smooth vector fields on . An affine connection on is a connection on the vector bundle . That is, it is a map , , that is -linear in , -linear in , and satisfies for every smooth function .
Remarks
Example: on with , the formula defines an affine connection, the flat connection; the three conditions follow from the linearity and the product rule of directional derivatives. Non-example: is not an affine connection, since is not -linear in . In a chart, is given by its Christoffel symbols , defined by . Every smooth manifold has affine connections: glue the flat connections of charts with a partition of unity. Two important tensors measure an affine connection: its torsion , built with the Lie bracket, and its curvature.
