Functions of a complex variable Riemann surfaces Theorem

Ahlfors–Bers theorem

Builds on Quasiconformal mappingBeltrami equationHolomorphic function

Statement

Let μ ⁣:ℂ→ℂ\mu \colon \C \to \C be measurable with ∥μ∥∞<1\norm{\mu}_\infty < 1. Let fμ ⁣:ℂ→ℂf^\mu \colon \C \to \C be the unique quasiconformal homeomorphism that fixes 00 and 11 and solves the Beltrami equation fzˉ=μfzf_{\bar z} = \mu f_z almost everywhere. Its existence and uniqueness is the measurable Riemann mapping theorem.

Let U⊂ℂU \subset \C be open. Let t↦μtt \mapsto \mu_t be a map from UU to the open unit ball of L∞(ℂ)L^\infty(\C) that is holomorphic as a map into the Banach space L∞(ℂ)L^\infty(\C). Then for each z∈ℂz \in \C, the function t↦fμt(z)t \mapsto f^{\mu_t}(z) is holomorphic on UU.

Remarks

For μ\mu with compact support, the proof writes the derivative ∂zˉ\partial_{\bar z} of the principal solution as a Neumann series in the Beurling transform TT: μ+μTμ+μT(μTμ)+⋯\mu + \mu T \mu + \mu T(\mu T \mu) + \cdots. The series converges in LpL^p for some p>2p > 2, because TT is an isometry of L2L^2 and its norm on LpL^p tends to 11 as p→2p \to 2. Each term depends holomorphically on μ\mu, and the convergence is locally uniform. The same argument gives real-analytic dependence when μt\mu_t depends real-analytically on a real parameter.

Example: for μt=tχ\mu_t = t \chi with χ\chi the indicator of a disc and ∣t∣<1\abs{t} < 1, the normalized solutions fμtf^{\mu_t} form a holomorphic family of quasiconformal maps through f0=id⁡f^{0} = \id.

The condition ∥μt∥∞<1\norm{\mu_t}_\infty < 1 is needed: when ∥μ∥∞=1\norm{\mu}_\infty = 1 the Beltrami equation is degenerate, and a homeomorphic solution need not exist.

For a student

This holomorphic dependence is what makes Teichmüller space a complex manifold: Beltrami coefficients give coordinates, and the solution maps vary holomorphically with them. It is also the tool behind holomorphic motions and quasiconformal surgery in complex dynamics, where one deforms a rational map by moving an invariant Beltrami coefficient in a holomorphic family.
