Definition
Let be a topological space and let be an abelian group. For , let be the group of all functions . The coboundary is where the hat means that is left out. Then , so is a cochain complex.
A function is locally zero if there is an open cover of with the following property. If the points all lie in one member of , then . The locally zero functions form a subcomplex , because maps locally zero functions to locally zero functions. Let . The Alexander–Spanier cohomology of with coefficients in is the cohomology of this cochain complex:
Remarks
Example: let be a single point. Then for every , and no nonzero function is locally zero. The coboundary is multiplication by , which is for even and for odd . So and for .
Non-example: a function on that is nonzero at some diagonal point is not locally zero, since every cover has a member that contains .
There is a relative version for a pair and a version with compact supports. On paracompact Hausdorff spaces, is isomorphic to Čech cohomology and to the sheaf cohomology of with coefficients in the constant sheaf .
