Definition
Let be a real number. Let and be the model surface of constant curvature and its diameter bound, as for CAT(k) spaces. Let be a metric space. The space is a length space if each distance is the infimum of the lengths of continuous curves from to . Geodesic triangles and comparison triangles in are as for CAT() spaces.
The space is an Alexandrov space of curvature if:
- is a complete, locally compact length space, and
- each point of has a neighbourhood with the following property. Take any geodesic triangle in of perimeter less than , any vertex and any point on the opposite side. Let be the comparison points in a comparison triangle in . Then .
Many authors also require to have finite Hausdorff dimension; that dimension is then an integer.
Remarks
Example: a complete Riemannian manifold with sectional curvature is an Alexandrov space of curvature , by Toponogov's theorem. In particular has curvature ; its triangles equal their comparison triangles.
Non-example: the hyperbolic plane of curvature does not have curvature . Take a geodesic triangle in it and the midpoint of one side. The distance from the opposite vertex to this midpoint is strictly less than in the flat comparison triangle, so clause 2 fails for .
For an integer , let be the quotient of by the group of rotations about through multiples of . This cone is an Alexandrov space of curvature , and it is not a smooth Riemannian manifold at its tip.
