Definition

Let XX be a set. An algebra of sets on XX is a subset ๐’œ\mathcal{A} of the power set of XX such that:

  1. Xโˆˆ๐’œX \in \mathcal{A}.
  2. If Aโˆˆ๐’œA \in \mathcal{A}, then its complement Xโˆ–AX \setminus A is in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}.
  3. If A,Bโˆˆ๐’œA, B \in \mathcal{A}, then the union AโˆชBA \cup B is in ๐’œ\mathcal{A}.

Remarks

On X=โ„•X = \N, the family ๐’œ\mathcal{A} of the subsets AA such that AA is finite or โ„•โˆ–A\N \setminus A is finite is an algebra. Clause 1 holds since โ„•โˆ–โ„•=โˆ…\N \setminus \N = \varnothing is finite. Clause 2 holds since the condition is symmetric in AA and โ„•โˆ–A\N \setminus A. Clause 3 holds since a union of two finite sets is finite, and a union that contains a set with finite complement has finite complement. This algebra is not a ฯƒ-algebra: the set of even numbers is a countable union of singletons, but neither it nor its complement is finite. The family of all finite subsets of โ„•\N is not an algebra, since clause 1 fails: โ„•\N is not finite. An algebra contains โˆ…\varnothing and is closed under finite intersections and differences, by De Morgan's laws. So an algebra of sets is exactly a ring of sets that contains XX. The name field of sets is also common.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
