Definition
Let be a relational structure with a finite nonempty universe and finitely many relations. The constraint satisfaction problem is the following decision problem. The input is a finite relational structure with relations of the same arities. The question is whether there is a homomorphism from to , a map preserving each relation. The polymorphism clone of is the clone of all operations on that are polymorphisms of every . The algebraic approach is the study of the computational complexity of through the algebra .
Remarks
The approach rests on a reduction principle. If and share the universe and , then reduces to in polynomial time. The reason is that each relation of is then primitive positive definable from , by the Pol–Inv Galois connection. Example: for the complete graph , asks whether a graph is -colourable, as a graph homomorphism to . The majority operation on is a polymorphism of the edge relation , and the problem is in polynomial time. Non-example of tractability: every polymorphism of has the form for a permutation of . So has no Taylor polymorphism, and -colouring is NP-complete.
